Welcome to Brinjal   Crop management and Diagnostic solutions

Brinjal Cultivation : : Seed rate & Nursery management

Seed rate : For raising one hectare crop, 200-250 grams of seeds are required for open pollinated varieties whereas for hybrids 100-120g seeds are sufficient. The nursery is sown on raised beds of 1.25 m width and 20 cm height. Fumigation with 1.5% solution of formalin is found effective for controlling the mortality at seedling stage. Seed treatment with fungicide like or Captan at 3g/kg of seed before sowing protects the seedlings from soil borne diseases. Seed priming with gibberellins improves the seed vigour, germination and uniformity of the nursery. Seed treatment with IAA (30 ppm) and subsequent application of Phorate and Chlorantranilitreole (corazen @0.3ml/liter)   showed beneficial effect on yield and control of shoot and fruit borer. In order to get better crop establishment and to have uniform, healthy seedlings which are free from pests and diseases at the time of planting, it is advised to use portray raised seedlings.

Nursery management :  Well-drained area near the water source is an ideal place for raising nursery. Raised beds are preferred over flat beds for raising the nursery because of better aeration and drainage. Root development and uprooting of seedling is better in raised beds. 200-250g of seeds are required per hectare for open pollinated varieties where as 100-120g of seed is required for F1 hybrids. In soil with good tilth raised nursery beds of 8m wide, 15cm high and of convenient length are prepared.   Ten kg well decomposed FYM, 100g of 15:15:15 OR 19:19:19: complex fertilizer along with 2.5g carbofuran per m2 is incorporated.   The beds are drenched with Captan (2g/litre.) or copper oxychloride (4g/litre.).  Seeds are sown thinly in rows 10cm apart, 0.5cm deep.  The beds are covered thinly with compost before mulching with dry straw or grass. Remove the grass covered after the seeds have germinated. On germination (6-8 days) the beds are drenched with Captan or copper Oxychloride. The seedlings will be ready for transplanting in about 5-6 weeks (35-40 days). Two to three sprays of monocrotophos (1ml/ litre) plus Zineb or Maneb(2g/ litre) in the nursery is essential, one of the sprays being given a day or two prior to transplanting.  During the last week in the nursery, the seedlings may be hardened by slightly withholding irrigation water. After the appearance of first true leaf, seedlings are thinned out.  The seedlings with 3-4 true leaves are transplanted within 4-6 weeks of sowing.  During Kharif the seedlings are sprayed with cypermethrin(Cymbush)  (0.5ml/l.) and Chlorothalonil (Kavach) (2g/l.) on 20th day and one day prior to transplanting to control mylocerous weevil and cercospora leaf spot respectively. Immediately after germination drench the nursery with 0.2% captan to avoid damping off diseases.  . To get better and uniform crop stand, seedlings of F1 brinjal can be raised by the use of plastic seedling trays and decomposed sterilized cocpeat. For protecting the seedlings from insect pest and diseases and to moderate the environment during nursery stage, seedlings can be raised inside a protected structure made of wooden poles or stone pillars and 40 mesh nylon net under 50% shade or in poly house
